AI Search Is Here. Your SEO Strategy Just Hasn't Caught Up Yet.

Search Garden Digital · Insights

A growing share of searches never end in a click anymore. Someone asks a question, an AI Overview or an AI Mode answer shows up at the top of the page, and the searcher gets what they need without visiting a single website. For a lot of business owners, that feels like the ground shifting under them. In a lot of ways, it is.

But "AI is changing search" doesn't mean SEO stopped mattering. It means the target moved. You're no longer just optimizing to rank on a results page. You're optimizing to be the source an AI system trusts enough to cite, summarize, and recommend. That's a different skill, and most agencies still aren't doing it.

What Actually Changed

Traditional SEO was built around ranking a page for a keyword. AI search works differently. These systems pull from multiple sources, synthesize an answer, and decide which sources are trustworthy enough to reference. Being technically well-optimized still matters, but it's no longer sufficient on its own. The systems are now evaluating whether your content demonstrates real expertise and whether your business is a credible source on the topic.

This is sometimes called GEO, or generative engine optimization. It's not a replacement for SEO. It's an extension of it, built on the same foundation of technical health, useful content, and credibility signals that good SEO has always required.

What Actually Still Works

  • Clear, specific answers. AI systems favor content that directly answers a question in plain language, not content padded around a keyword.
  • Structured data. Schema markup helps AI systems understand what your page is actually about and pull the right details.
  • Real expertise signals. Author credentials, original data, and firsthand experience carry more weight than generic, AI-generated filler.
  • A fast, technically sound site. If a page is slow or hard to crawl, it's harder for both Google and AI systems to trust it.
  • Consistent local signals. For local and service-area businesses, accurate business information across the web still drives whether you show up at all.

Notice what's not on that list: keyword stuffing, thin content built purely to rank, and any strategy that treats AI systems as something to trick rather than something to earn trust with. Those approaches were already losing to Google's core updates. They lose even faster with AI-driven search.

What This Means for Your Business

If you run an irrigation company, a landscaping business, or a funeral home, your customers are increasingly asking AI tools questions before they ever search Google the old-fashioned way. "Who does drip irrigation installs near me" or "what should I ask a funeral home before booking" are exactly the kind of questions AI Overviews are built to answer. If your site isn't structured to be a credible, citable source on those topics, you're invisible in a conversation that's happening whether you're part of it or not.

The businesses that come out ahead here won't be the ones chasing every AI trend. They'll be the ones with a genuinely solid technical and content foundation, the same foundation good SEO has always required, applied with an eye toward how AI systems actually pull and trust information.
